Green building articles usually focus on exciting new technologies that save energy and resources. In this issue of the Master Builder Advisor, we showcase a less glamorous, but equally important, aspect of green building: finding new life for materials salvaged from home construction projects.
We introduce greenGoat, a Massachusetts-based, non-profit organization dedicated to that very purpose. We also include two case studies: one showing how items taken from a home before it was torn down were reused to create affordable housing in a Cape Cod community, and another showing how an antique cottage itself was salvaged and transformed into one of Nantucket’s greenest homes. We hope this will inspire you to consider recycling materials from your own home when you begin a remodeling or new construction project.
